Depart
for a half-day tour to the town of Sarchi. The route winds through the
scenic town of Alajuela, for which the region is also known, full of colonial
charm. Then
pass through Heredia, one of the oldest settlements in Costa Rica, still
boasting a quiet residential and agricultural life similar to that of
a century ago. Next stop is Sarchi. This Alajuelan town is widely known
for its multi-colored wooden crafts which go back to the early 20th century.
The quaint oxcarts, enriched with decorative geometric forms, became a
tradition not only in Sarchi, but in other parts of Costa Rica as well.
The oxcarts were used to transport coffee from the highlands to the lowlands.
This is a great place for souvenir shopping - everything made of wood
from rocking chairs to earrings! Return to your hotel with the remainder
of the day at leisure.
