Monteverde Cloud Forest

The
Monteverde Cloud Forest and nearby Santa Elena Reserve, at an altitude
of over 4000 feet, support six distinct ecological communities of
plants and animals with over 2000 plant species and more than 320
species of birds. Monteverde is home to the resplendent Quetzal,
with its metallic green feathers and golden highlights, to the Golden
Toad, unique to this area, and to a myriad of breathtakingly beautiful
butterflies.
Straddling
the Continental Divide at 1440 meters (4662 feet), the Santa Elena
and Monteverde Cloud Forest area offers one of the most interesting
places to visit in Costa Rica.
In
Costa Rica's Monteverde rainforest are found more than 100 species
of mammals including five species of cats, over 400 species of birds
including 30 kinds of hummingbirds, tens of thousands of insect
species (over 5000 species of moths) and 2500 species of plants,
including 420 kinds of orchids. The area is acclaimed as one of
the most outstanding wildlife refuges in the New World Tropics. |
