Explore higher in the rainforest canopy with Sacha Lodge's newly redesigned, expanded Kapok Tower. Climb stairs through the lower levels of the forest until you reach the new platforms located at over 135 (43 meters) above the forest floor. Built on a hill, the new metal tower is next to a giant kapok tree from which via a metal bridge, you reach the top of the tree and the 500 square foot (50 square meter) platform.
Be it shortly after sunrise or before sunset, from the tower's ample platform it is possible to observe toucans, parrots, and dozens of other colorful bird species in the treetops. Noisy howler monkeys, foraging squirrel monkeys or the gentle three-toed sloth may also be seen.
Many species of birds, reptiles, insects and even small mammals spend most or even all of their lives in trees. For example, numerous tree frogs, antbirds, and woodcreepers are well-adapted to find exotic insects living in the crevices of tree bark and vines, where larger predators like boa constrictors wait for them to come within reach. Mammals like kinkajous and monkeys throughout the canopy search for fruit in the Amazon's towering trees. Sloths forage for leaves above the ground but away from the sharp eyes of hungry eagles above. Meanwhile, jaguars and pumas lie on understory branches in search of prey wandering by below.
As for plants, many of our common houseplants like ferns, philodendrons, orchids and bromeliads are actually epiphytes, adapted to grow on tree limbs above the ground. Their beautiful flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds seldom seen well from below.
Sacha Lodge is proud to be among the first to make this unique, unseen world accessible to its guests!
