S trategically
located only 25 miles down the Amazon River, with air-conditioned units
with hot water showers, Ceiba Tops is ideal if you have only one or two
nights to spend in the jungle. A swimming pool and room service complete
the recent improvements. Garden walkways connect each room to the dining
room, bar and hammock house. Originally Explorama Inn, Ceiba Tops retains
the first ten separate thatch-roofed cottages with private porches and
baths, electricity and ceiling fans. Expansion plans are now completed
on 32 new, air-conditioned units, with hot water showers, telephones and internet
access. Treks through virgin rainforest and boat trips to neighboring
villages are only part of the activities available. Nights at Ceiba Tops
can be combined with stays at the other lodges.
Further down the Amazon (about 50 miles) is the more typical jungle
lodge, Explorama Lodge. It is nestled in primary rainforest with more
than 30 screened rooms and adjoining bath facilities, and is completely
illuminated by kerosene lanterns. A variety of hikes and boat trips are
at the disposal of the guest including the Seven Bridges Trail. A minimum
two-night stay is required. Expedition boats take you deep into the virgin
rainforest.
Over
100 miles from Iquitos in the Sucusari Nature Reserve is the privately-owned
Plant and Animal Reserve and ExplorNapo Camp. Very basic facilities (thatch
rooms with beautiful views down the Sucusari Stream, kerosene lighting,
a screened dining room/bar, open-hearth cooking and solar-powered fans)
do not disturb the flora or fauna of the area, which is why people choose
to stay at ExplorNapo Camp!

Nature in the Microcosm |
During the minimum
two-night stay at ExplorNapo (plus one night at Explorama Lodge or Ceiba
Tops), the explorer takes a half-day trip to Lake Shimbay, a black water
lake where the unusual Hoatzin bird can be found. Canoe excursions can
be full-day, half-day, or short trips in the late afternoons or early
mornings. Most important is the full-day excursion to the ACEER Laboratory
and the "Canopy Walkway." A donation to the Peruvian conservation
organization (CONAPAC), which maintains the Canopy Walkway and surrounding
reserve, is included in the basic tariff for guests staying at ExplorNapo
Camp.
ExplorTambos
is a primitive camp deep in the virgin rainforest reserve of the Napo
River, a two-hour walk from ExplorNapo Camp. Overnight excursions to the
Tambos may be added on to your basic ExplorNapo package, or one night
may be substituted at an additional cost. The Tambos have a maximum capacity
for 16 truly adventuresome explorers, who share this wilderness experience,
sleeping in individual shelters with mosquito netting (shelters for couples
are also available), eating meals cooked on an open-hearth fireplace,
and using the Tambos as the departure point for newly opened trails. Due
to the Tambo's isolation, the possibilities of spotting wildlife are much
better than from any other lodge in this part of the Amazon.
The
longest treetop walkway in the world is at nearby ACEER
LAB encampment and Ethnobotanical Garden.
The Canopy Walkway provides an experience unequaled in the rainforest!
Reaching a height of up to 115 feet and extending over 1,700 feet, the
walkway affords the best vantage points for observing wildlife and vegetation.
The walkway is accessible to all and requires no special skills or equipment.
Combining two nights at ExplorNapo with two nights at Explorama Lodge
ensures a very broad spectrum of different ecological environments.

Overnights in tents at ACEER are available at an additional cost,
for those who want to view the huge flocks of birds and wildlife activity
in the very early morning or savor the sunset on the Walkway.
