north 2½ hours from Rio
to the seaside resort of Buzios, playground to European and Brazilian
jet setters. The resort is built
in the Portuguese colonial style around an antique fishing village
that is located almost at the
tip of a long, 92-square kilometer cape that juts out into the
Atlantic in a west/northeast direction. There
are 23 charming beaches to chose from skirting the peninsula.
Follow a day of sunbathing or windsurfing with shopping and a
sumptuous seafood dinner. Rates include round-trip transfers from
Rio via shuttle van/bus with a driver. |

The
oldest and most quaint part of town is Armacao/Centro Beach ("praia" in
Portuguese), with Canto Beach further to the northwest. The old church
sits on a point between Armacao and Ossos beaches.
The
"old" town is characterized by a beautiful church from the 1700s, sitting
on a promontory which divides the city beach (Armacao) and the piers from
Praia dos Osos, (left), so named because in whaling times, that is where
the whalers dumped the whale bones.
There
is a famous statue in the bay of Old Town called "The Three Fishermen"
(right). Here you can see them at low tide. (Move your mouse over the image and see them at high tide.) At
low tide the beaches are quite large, and the water is warm and very clean
and clear you can see tropical fish swimming around your feet!
When
you're finished swimming and/or sunbathing on the beach, you can either
walk back to town, (a 20-30 minute walk), or for about US $3 you can take
a taxi, or if it is still daylight, a water taxi (below, left) for about
US $4.
The
main, commercial part of town stretches off in a southern and western
direction. The shopping district covers about 20 square blocks of pedestrian-only
streets. It is chock-a-block full of shops, restaurants, and shoppers.
There are lots of neat, tucked-away "malls" with art galleries and lots
of shops with unique, beautiful crafts.
There
are all sorts of restaurants of all nationalities, like this colorful
avant-garde Mexican restaurant (right), or more traditional restaurants,
with both indoor and sidewalk dining. Average price for dinner with salad
and a glass of wine: US$10 with carne, US$15 for seafood.
